Zero Waste Solution – Bin Free Cities

The basic concept of Bin free project is to make city free/ reduce the bins to minimum number and this can only be done by daily primary door to door collection of MSW. The secondary collection & transfer to the dump sites either by intermediate transfer station or directly by closed body fabricated hydraulic automobiles vehicles.In slums and congested localities this activity is done with the help of tricycle /Bin rickshaws. This helps in keeping city clean by reducing the number of community bins to a minimum.

The Bin Free Project is a major solid waste management program that includes the following aspects:

Daily door-to-door garbage collection through hydraulic automobile vehicles

Waste segregation

Transportation via intermediate transfer stations

Employment Generation

Awareness building

This project utilizes appropriate technology (ergonomic hardware) for waste collection & transportation:

Containerized hand carts; § Containerized tricycles; and

Hydraulic automobile Vehicles

Compactors and Hook Loader vehicles

This way of domestic waste management is in compliance of MSW guidelines and guarantees that:

Waste is handled only once and residents do not litter on streets.

Waste transported in covered vehicles in a hygienic manner and prevents spillage & foul smell.

There is no need of burning the garbage or dumping it in streets, drains and open places.

Adds to the aesthetic value of the city by removing the unhygienic conditions that exist around the community bins.

Swatchta Doot (D2D Waste Collector)

Appointed volunteers were the vital links and key contributors for making Nagpur a ‘Green and Clean’ city. These volunteers who were earlier known as ‘Rag Pickers’ would collect and sort the recyclable dry waste like paper, plastics, metal, rags, etc for their daily living.

This project has made the following positive impacts on rag pickers in the city

Livelihood creation for the most downtrodden segment of the society

Earning at least minimum wages and additional income from recyclable material (Rs.50 – 100 per day).

Dignified employment:

  • Got title of swachta doot and community recognition;
  • Transition from rag picker to doot;
  • Got uniform and protective gear;

Saving habits developed by forming Self Help Groups. A total of 40 SHGs have been formed till date consisting of 500 swachta doots.

Don’t have to put their hands in filth and spread it around the roads to pick out recyclables for their daily living.

Indirect employment

Recyclable material trading with value addition due to segregation;

Selling cleaner waste has enabled in escalating their incomes.
